What's the Story?
ANGRY BIRDS MYSTERY ISLAND follows the adventures of three hatchlings, Buddy (Harvey Guillén), Mia (Kate Micucci), and Rosie (Nasim Pedrad) and piglet Hamylton (Dominic Monaghan) after they're catapulted to a mysterious island. Surrounded by a vast amount of litter and threatened by strange cultures and active volcanoes, the group must learn to work together to build a safe haven and find their way back home.
Is It Any Good?
Next to other spin-off series in the franchise, this has more substance, adventure, and positive themes. Still, Angry Birds Mystery Island is mostly comedic and entertaining, with only hints at environmental concerns and teamwork that may be more effective if pointed out by a parent. That said, the show aims to be family entertainment because the characters reference other media like Castaway and Lord of the Rings that young viewers may miss. There are also hints of irony and sarcasm, like when a character naively says "Adults always do the right thing for the environment!" then pauses for a beat before continuing. While the characters are young members of their species, they act and talk like teenagers, making the target audience older than you might expect for the series.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the challenges of being a castaway, isolated from family and home. What are some ways they find to build comfort and a sense of community?
This series includes a lot less violence than other stories in the franchise. Why do you think that is? Do you miss seeing characters competing with each other? Do you prefer seeing them working together against external forces? Does this approach feel more or less relatable to you?
At times, the show makes references to other media like The Lord of the Rings and Castaway. Notice if your child understands those references and discuss why they might be included. What makes content family-friendly beyond being kid-oriented?
