What's the Story?
CALVIN knows he's always been a boy, even if the world sees him as a girl. Knowing he's a boy in his head and his heart inspires him to share his truth with others. He's scared to tell his family, but quickly realizes they love him no matter what gender he is -- and he learns the word for how he feels is "transgender." Calvin spends the summer transitioning by buying new clothes and cutting his hair. But, he feels scared to go back to school because of how he may be treated. When the first day of school comes, will Calvin's worried "what-ifs" come true or will he feel safe and welcome?
Is It Any Good?
This is a daring picture book that celebrates transgender children and inclusivity. Calvin will resonate with trans children, as well as their family members and friends. The authors were inspired to write a story that can help caregivers and educators navigate a tricky subject. The topic is approached in a developmentally appropriate manner. Kayla Harren, illustrator of award-winning picture books, created warm, softly colored images that help draw in readers and showcase the characters' emotions. The story is heartwarming, timely, and affirming at a moment when many people reject members of the trans community.
