WASHINGTON -- Momentum is building in Congress to protect kids online, with the introduction of two bills this week in the House of Representatives that are companions to long-standing legislation in the U.S. Senate. Common Sense Media's Chief Advocacy Officer, Danny Weiss, issued the following statement.

"Common Sense Media is very pleased to see the bi-partisan introduction of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), and the bi-partisan introduction of the Children and Teens Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0), in the U.S. House of Representatives. Both bills already have strong bi-partisan support in the U.S. Senate.

"Now that there are companion bills in both the House and the Senate, we once again call on Congress to move quickly to pass strong protections for the privacy and overall well-being of America's children and teens online.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Cathy Castor (D-FL), Erin Houchin (R-IN), and Kim Schier (D-WA), on the introduction of KOSA, and the efforts of Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) on the introduction of COPPA 2.0. And of course we again applaud the long-standing leadership of Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) for having led the fight on KOSA for so long, and similarly of Sens. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) for driving COPPA 2.0 to the place it is today.

"Congress has to make kids a higher priority with their actions, not just their words. Passing strong data privacy and online safety bills for kids and teens is the action we are looking for."
