Common Sense Media Applauds President Biden’s Call for Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence

SAN FRANCISCO, October 30, 2023—Today, President Biden issued an Executive Order to establish new safety and security standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The order references voluntary commitments from 15 leading tech companies to drive responsible development of AI, and highlights areas for government action on AI in education, health care, and cybersecurity, among others. Common Sense Media Founder and CEO, James P. Steyer, issued the following statement in response to the Executive Order:

"This Executive Order is a very important step in our nation's effort to establish guardrails on AI while also promoting positive uses of this powerful technology. While necessary AI legislation is being developed, this Executive Order starts to set important parameters and sends a clear message that transparency from AI technologists is non-negotiable. The public, especially families with children, should have access to information on the risks and limitations of AI models, so that they aren't misled to believe results that are incorrect, incomplete, or inappropriate.

"In addition, we are glad to see that the executive order highlights the impact AI will have on education, in cybersecurity, in health care, and on other key areas. And in this order, the president correctly calls on Congress to pass bipartisan data privacy legislation to protect Americans, especially children, from the harmful effects of hasty and irresponsible AI development and deployment.

"This order is the latest effort by President Biden and his Administration to protect the safety and security of American families, and we look forward to helping the Administration, Congress, and other stakeholders put proper safeguards in place that protect human rights, democracy writ large, and the well-being of children and families."
