Common Sense Media Responds to President Biden's State of The Union Address
WASHINGTON, March 5, 2024 --- On Thursday, President Biden will deliver his third State of the Union Address. Ahead of the speech, James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, issued the following statement.
"We hope the president will continue his leadership on online safety and privacy for kids tonight in the SOTU. Momentum is building on bipartisan legislation in the Senate that the president supports, with more than 60 Senators supporting the Kids Online Safety Act and key leadership support for an update to the 25-year-old children's privacy law, COPPA.
"The president should remind Congress in no uncertain terms that it is not enough to have Mark Zuckerberg apologize to parents whose children have died from suicide related to their experiences on social media. Laws protect kids, apologies don't. And in addition to reigning in social media giants, our country needs the President's continued leadership on AI safety and trust and putting appropriate guardrails on this huge new technology that will dramatically impact kids and families."
