Common Sense Media Responds to the Passage of Maryland Online Privacy Act and the Maryland Kids Code
WASHINGTON, May 9, 2024 — Today, two bipartisan Maryland state bills that aim to mitigate social media harms to children, the MD Kids Code and the Maryland Online Data Privacy Act of 2024, have been signed into law. In response, Common Sense Media Senior Counsel for Tech Policy, Holly Grosshans, said:
"Maryland's strong votes in the legislature and the governor's signature of these two bills that strengthen kids' and teens' safety and privacy online sends a powerful message to other states that are actively considering kids' online safety and privacy measures that it is time to get on board. We applaud Governor Moore and the bipartisan sponsors of these two bills for their leadership.
"There is more work to be done, however. That is why Common Sense Media continues to support legislation at the state and federal level that features kid-centered design, safety, and privacy that will improve the well-being of kids across the country. From coast to coast and in Congress, now is the time for all legislative bodies to put their money where their mouths are and vote to protect kids' health and safety online."
