What's the Story?
In DAVEY AND JONESIE'S LOCKER, best friends Davey (Veronika Slowikowska) and Jonesie (Jaelynn Thora Brooks) are bored with their high school lives and their conforming, "sheeple" classmates. Everything changes when their uptight science teacher, Mr. Schneider (Dan Beirne), accidentally turns their shared locker into a portal into the multiverse. Every time they go through the locker portal, they're transported into an alternate universe. They're delighted to see their classmates in all sorts of different scenarios and outfits, like one multiverse where everyone's in a gem-worshipping cult. They bumble through the different worlds, drawing the attention of the MOM enforcement agency for being "anomalies" in the universes. They aren't sure how to go back to their original universe, but one thing's for certain: high school sure isn't boring anymore.
Is It Any Good?
This surrealist and quirky comedy is very much a teen-friendly version of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Davey and Jonesie's Locker will appeal to many middle schoolers and teens who feel like they don't fit in. Jokes are fairly high-brow (for example, the high school is named after the Schrödinger's Cat math theorem). Sometimes the absurdity really lands; other times the series feels like its protagonists: trying too hard to be different. Despite the show's unevenness, it's refreshing to see a teen comedy where girls get to be the heroes despite being super weird and anti-establishment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Davey and Jonesie's attitude that all their classmates are "sheeple" just blindly accepting the status quo. Do you empathize? What do you think change would actually look like to Davey and Jonesie?
Is it important that Davey and Jonesie are girls? Can you think of other teenage female media characters who break rules and are unapologetically weird?
How does the show use the multiverse to explore different dimensions of characters' personalities?
