AI reading tutor + book delivery service shines as a responsible AI application
What is it?
Ello is an AI reading tutor and book delivery service designed to support struggling readers age 4–8 (pre-K through third grade reading levels) on their learning journey. Ello first became publicly available in 2022.
Ello offers access to its Read with Ello app via a monthly subscription purchased by parents or caregivers, and is not currently available in schools.
Ello is currently priced at $25/month and requires a tablet. Ello works on a number of tablets (e.g., Amazon Fire, iPad, Android) at a variety of price points.
How it works
The Read with Ello app uses a proprietary speech recognition AI model that listens and tracks as children read text from preselected physical or digital books. It uses a phonics-based (learning by sound) curriculum to help children when they get stuck and coach them through tricky words.
Speech recognition, also referred to as speech-to-text and automatic speech recognition (ASR), is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that recognizes spoken language and translates it into text. This text can be used on its own and is also readable by other systems that use text as an input. Speech recognition works by analyzing audio, breaking it down into individual sounds, digitizing those sounds into a computer-readable format, and using an algorithm to predict the most suitable words, which are then transcribed into text. Speech recognition is not the same thing as voice recognition, which is a biometric technology used to identify an individual's voice.
Highlights
- Ello stands out for the design of its AI reading tutor, the selection of diverse and engaging books, and the positive ways the AI tutor motivates young, struggling readers.
- The company's responsible AI practices, particularly when it comes to machine learning fairness, have contributed to the product's high rating.
- The company's detailed Participatory Disclosures provided a strong basis for our evaluation against the Common Sense AI Principles.
Harms and Ethical Risks
- Speech recognition technology can be very difficult to get right, especially for those whose speech isn't recognized by the product. When AI speech recognition models don't recognize diverse speech patterns like accents or dialects, it can lead to errors, or "false negatives." The converse, "false positives," can also happen, which in this case means the speech recognition model could recognize a word as correct when it was not. While both of these could hamper accuracy and make the technology less reliable, false negatives for Ello could also amplify unfair biases.
- You say "toh-MAY-toh," I say "tuh-MAH-toh." Even though Ello is currently English only, people speak the language in many different ways that are always changing. This variation is shaped by many different regional, social, and contextual elements. This is especially true for what is called dialectical variation, in which grammar, vocabulary, and sound choices lead to many different ways to say the same words. Children's speech can vary even more. They have shorter vocal tracts, inaccurate articulation, they make syntax errors, and their pronunciation and grammar is still developing. Adopting best practices, like a pre-read phonetic alignment for each reader, would allow Ello to account for the wide variety of how English is spoken, and would also help decrease dependence on any assumptions about which pronunciations are "right" and which are "wrong." This is critical to ensure that fairness is prioritized, rather than unfair outcomes.
- It's expensive. While Ello costs far less than a private tutor, at $25 a month (plus the cost of a tablet) it is still out of reach for many who could benefit. While Ello was built with the intention of closing the youth literacy gap, the high cost of the service could end up increasing, not decreasing, the disparity that already exists.
Limitations
- Ello will not work for children who are having trouble reading every word. The company specifies that a child should be able to read "I am a cat" to use the product.
- Ello does not support languages beyond English, and it cannot be used outside of the U.S.
- It is important that parents and caregivers of kids with dyslexia or other literacy learning conditions know that while Ello may be a helpful tool, it is not designed to address these conditions.
Misuses
- Ello is not designed to be a formal reading assessment.
