What's the Story?
In FARM DREAMS, farming expert Indy Officinalis tries to help make Americans' farming journeys a bit more fruitful. She visits different types of small-scale farms in the U.S., like a family's homesteading farm, a rooftop flower farm, and an Alaskan kelp farm. Each farm is facing different challenges, and Indy consults with local farmers to get ideas and inspiration to pass along. She helps them make small changes that can help make their farms more sustainable, less time-consuming, and more profitable. In the process, Indy teaches the home viewer about different farming techniques and historical contexts.
Is It Any Good?
Kids probably won't mind watching this show along with their grown-ups, but it's unlikely that kids will choose to watch Farm Dreams on their own. It's slow paced, and most kids won't fit into the target demographic (seemingly adults who harbor a secret ambition to quit their desk jobs and begin an agrarian lifestyle). For those kids that do check out Farm Dreams, there's lots to learn about crop and animal care and eco-friendly farming practices.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Farm Dreams shows the farming lifestyle. Does the show make it look easy or hard? Rewarding or stress-inducing? How does it match or not match the impression of farming you had before watching?
Is there any plant you'd be curious to learn about growing? Can we research more about it?
