What's the Story?
HITLER AND THE NAZIS: EVIL ON TRIAL is a documentary series that chronicles the rise and fall of Hitler and Nazi leadership. Contextualized within the testimonies that took place in the Nuremberg Trials, archive film and audio footage, dramatic reenactments, and interviews with historians and other experts, reveal the key events in Hitler's early career. These events eventually led to his supreme leadership of the German Reich, and the docu shows how he and other Nazis designed, implemented, and reinforced his vengeful and racist ideology throughout occupied Europe. The writings and radio broadcasts of the late U.S. journalist and author William L. Shirer, who spent time in Europe actively covering the Nazis in Europe during World War II and their post-war trials, also shed light on Hitler's military tactics, and the Nazi's day-to-day inhumane enforcement of the regime's anti-Semitic policies and the Final Solution. It also examines the mistakes Hitler made during the war which led to German's loss, and the attitudes of Nazi leaders when being held responsible for crimes against humanity.
Is It Any Good?
The somber docuseries breaks down how Hitler rose from being an Austrian starving artist to becoming a German totalitarian leader of a regime willing to murder six million Jews and others on his orders. While Hitler and the Nazis talks about the events in European history that formed the path to the dictator's political success, including the assassination of Archduke Franz Fernandez of Austria, Germany's loss of World War I, and the economic collapse that followed, much of this is offered within the context of trying to explain the ideology that guided Hitler and the Nazis' beliefs that they had the moral high ground when murdering millions of people. It also underscores how this belief system made it possible for Hitler to prolong the war despite the deterioration of his mental state, and the obvious indicators that the Nazis were going to lose. It's educational, but some traditionalists may not like the featured colorized archived footage, or the use of a digitally recreated voice of the late William L. Shirer in an attempt to be more attention-grabbing. Nonetheless, history buffs will find Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial worth the watch.
