What's the Story?
ICE COLD: THE UNTOLD STORY OF HIP-HOP JEWELRY looks at jewelry in hip-hop through the lens of Black culture, contrasting how jewelry is portrayed when associated with rappers to how it is portrayed when associated with generational wealth. Executive producers Migos enlist rappers from the golden era to the present to talk about what jewelry represents and how it has evolved over the last 50 years.
Is It Any Good?
Jewelry in hip-hop has been part of some of the most insidious racial stereotyping of the last few decades, as shown here from a cultural and historical perspective. However, the series doesn't seem to have much to say beyond its initial illustration of Black wealth vs. White wealth in America, so it tends to have its subjects repeat the same talking points throughout. Ultimately, Ice Cold's often heavyweight guests -- including Slick Rick and Eric B. & Rakim -- simply show off their own investments in jewelry, which may end up perpetuating the same stereotypes the series seems to want to break.

How is hip-hop jewelry portrayed outside of hip-hop? How does Ice Cold explain the common stereotypes about rappers and jewelry?
What are the differences between how wealth is perceived inside and outside of hip-hop culture? Does jewelry have symbolism outside of simply representing wealth and status?
