What's the Story?
In MAN ON THE RUN, businessman Jho Low becomes a fugitive after cash goes missing at a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund that he has access to through political connections between 2009 and 2018. Through firsthand interviews, archival footage and photos, and reenactments, Low is alleged to be the mastermind of a multibillion-dollar money laundering plot that pays for the playboy's lavish lifestyle that includes a private jet, parties with A-list celebrities, and financing of the film The Wolf of Wall Street.
Is It Any Good?
The cost of high-end living takes center stage in this formidable documentary about the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) financial fiasco. "I like to plan my evenings, and make sure that I go to the best parties," admits alleged 1MDB embezzler Jho Low in Man on the Run. For his birthday, Low treats himself to a big bash in a Las Vegas lot and reportedly pays Britney Spears $1 million to pop out of a baked birthday cake. "Money is money," says Jennifer Peros, a magazine editor who observes the actions of celebrities at nightclubs. "Everybody wants it, and a lot of people do whatever it takes to get."
