What's the Story?
In MY MAGIC CLOSET, Carol (Sharon Blanche) has a dream to dance the graceful way her deceased mother did. She dreams of becoming an accomplished ballerina, but she's often too busy to get to practice on time. She studies hard, works in the family cafe, and cleans up after her aunt and cousin. When the K-Pop craze shines unwanted attention her way (as the only kid at her Brazilian high school of Korean descent), she acts out in frustration, shattering the mirror on her closet door. Soon, a visitor from far away emerges from her closet, and Carol's world turns upside down. How can she balance everything she's asked to do? Will her secret be discovered?
Is It Any Good?
Capturing the worldwide effect of the K-Pop craze, this sometimes clumsy look at tokenism gains momentum as the series progresses. In My Magic Closet, a teen girl who has effectively blocked out her Korean ancestry copes with the vulnerability that she feels about being the only Asian girl among her Brazilian peers. Though the racism in this show is dealt with in unsubtle ways, tender moments of discovery help propel this show along.
Tweens who love K-Pop will enjoy this show the most. The dubbing can be awkward, but the dreamy idols' allure will translate regardless.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Parents can talk about curiosity in My Magic Closet. If she hadn't been curious, Carol wouldn't have gone on the journey that takes her to South Korea. How does curiosity inspire you to take journeys of self discovery?
Carol is asked to do a lot, and she always does it. When does her integrity slip? Is it because she's angry?
Perseverance is important for dancers like Carol. What does she do when doors of opportunity are closed in her face?
