What's the Story?
OUTLAWS is the story of an innocent bullied teen, Nacho (Marcos Ruiz), who takes out his frustrations on his nice family and finds his self esteem among a crew of petty thieves who deal drugs and knock over gas stations. Zarco (Chechu Salgado) is the leader, charismatic enough to make Nacho believe he's worthy and grownup, something he hasn't felt so far. But it is for the love of Zarco's flirtatious girlfriend Tere (Begona Vargas) that Nacho crosses from law-abiding naïf to swaggering renegade bank robber. He's slowly enticed to join the gang in robbing pharmacies for pills and eventually banks. All the while his love for the unattainable Tere goads him to greater crimes. A terrifying police chase and bloody wound send him home for solace. There he learns that his father is a stand-up guy.
Is It Any Good?
Outlaws gets off to a slow start and by the end feels like several movies in one. Its emphasis is on class and social position and how the law treats criminals from the upper classes differently from those who come from poverty. The somber tone of what starts as a movie about life in high school alters unexpectedly as the end offers a commentary on the unfairness of a system that dooms some to criminal lives and saves others before they stray far too far. This adds up to the story of a narrow escape from a ruined life.
