What's the Story?
PRETTY FREEKIN SCARY throws viewers into the life of Frankie Ripp (Elianah Su'a), a typical teen from Snickering Willows with a seemingly perfect life. She's part of a loving family, everyone at school knows her as the captain of the volleyball team, and she just got a new boyfriend. But one day, all that changes. While absentmindedly texting and walking, she falls through a manhole and into the Underworld. When Frankie arrives, she's informed that she's dead, and quickly strikes a deal with the Grim Reaper (GR) to let her return home. Frankie goes home with her Underworld guardians, Pretty and Scary, but not before hastily agreeing to a contract with GR that she doesn't read before signing. When she returns to her life she realizes that much has changed, and she has to figure out her new place in the world. Plus, she has to enlist help from her little brother, Pretty, and Scary to complete random tasks from GR in order to actually stay alive. Can she juggle everything?
Is It Any Good?
This typical Disney sitcom has both cheesy moments and somewhat entertaining storylines. Pretty Freekin Scary caters to young audiences, and fans of the original book series will recognize the main characters. The series spotlights a diverse cast who try to live normal lives, and don't realize how much interaction they have with the Underworld. Frankie's choice to not tell her parents about her contract with the Grim Reaper doesn't model honesty. The adults in the series also aren't great role models based on their aloofness.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the importance of teamwork in Frankie's successful completion of the Grim Reaper's tasks. If you had to do something really hard, who would you want to be on your team?
How did Frankie feel when she learned about everything that had changed after she came back to life?
Why is the Grim Reaper untrustworthy?
