CURSING

I was trying to watch this movie with my class. Two minutes in they say “badass”. We turned it off because that’s so ridiculous.

"Badass" 2 min into the movie

I'm watching this with my 2 year old. Main character 2 mins into the movie: "Master bunnies are badass" Really. The writers thought it was acceptable to use "badass" in what's basically the opening scene of a children's movie..... about Easter bunnies. I like Metalocalypse and Slipknot; im not easily offended but the main character using "badass" in an opening scene about easterbunnies is pathetic lazy writing. Do better.

Is It Any Good?

For Easter movies that focus on bunnies and eggs, this animated adventure is a mostly solid entry in the category. Rabbit Academy's animation is attractive and has an art style that sets it apart from lots of modern features. The messages are strong, too, with engineering and invention serving as a way to show the importance of perseverance and trial and error. The community aspect has a double impact, with an elder explaining how the group alone is like a twig and together they are strong. On top of that, communities successfully mix, with rabbits and foxes learning to work together.

What's less interesting though is the bickering. Characters, including our heroes, seem paranoid and quick to turn on each other. Sure they apologize. But it feels like an extra emotional weight the movie didn't need to carry. Maybe this is a reflection of how prey need to constantly be on their guard, but the result is pockets of the movie that feel uncomfortable, especially with the liberal use of mild negative slurs. Still, the action is good, the story is sound, and the messages are positive, so a place is secured on the Easter movie shelf for this one.
