What's the Story?
THE PRINCE OF TENNIS is an anime series about Ryoma Echizen (voiced in English dub by David Neil Black), a tennis prodigy nicknamed the prince of tennis because his father is a famous professional tennis player. Ryoma, only 12 years old, begins attending Seishun Academy, a school known for its talented players and impressive tennis club. Despite his young age, Ryoma quickly proves himself to be one of the best at Seishun, guaranteeing him a spot on the school's tennis team alongside his upperclassmen. From here Ryoma focuses on developing his own tennis style, apart from his father, and win the National Tennis Championship for his school.
Is It Any Good?
Considered one of the all-time great sports shonen anime, this series' intense tennis matches will entertain existing fans of the genre or anyone interested in tennis. The Prince of Tennis is a classic anime with all the standard fare you can expect from sports-themed anime; the players have unique skills that make the matches feel like you're watching two tennis superheroes go at it. There's a good amount of exposition explaining how the players can pull off these incredible and unrealistic moves. There's also a lot of emphasis on personal growth, hard work, friendship, and believing in your teammates -- all common positive themes found in sports anime. Overall, the show isn't going to surprise viewers who are already familiar with sports-style anime, but its status as a classic and its consistent popularity make it one that shouldn't be missed.
