What's the Story?
ICON AND INFERNO begins in Honolulu, a year after Sydney and Winter completed their first mission together for the covert ops Panacea Group. Winter's still the world's most famous pop star, but he's finding out how complicated fame can be. He's walked out of a TV interview after being ambushed with questions he felt invaded his privacy and has just discovered someone close to him is trying to sell a tell all book. If that weren't enough, his not to be trusted New York socialite ex-girlfriend Gavi has shown up unannounced and is trying to reignite their tumultuous relationship. Then Sydney suddenly appears in Honolulu with the offer of a new assignment from Panacea. Their new mission -- rescue an agent who's gone missing in Singapore, the first stop on Winter's Asia tour. At Panacea headquarters, Sydney's furious when she learns the missing agent is the Arsonist, an ex-lover she hoped she'd never ever see again. Since Sydney will once again go undercover as Winter's bodyguard, he asks Gavi to come along as his date for a gala at the home of Singapore's president. But nothing in Singapore goes as planned after Winter and Sydney discover there's a plan to assassinate a powerful figure attending the gala, Sydney's targeted by a mysterious killer, they're betrayed by someone they thought they could trust, and have to literally run for their lives to evade Singaporean police and rogue CIA agents.
Is It Any Good?
This romantic thriller unfolds at breakneck speed, with head spinning twists and turns, unexpected betrayals, and two complex and vulnerable young spies. There's a lot of action in Icon and Inferno but the ongoing romantic tension between Winter and Sydney more than balances out the car chases. While the novel can be read on its own, teens will have to read Stars and Smoke to learn about the beginning of the relationship between Sydney and Winter (Sydney thought Winter was a bit of a fool and Winter was wary but in awe of Sydney), Winter's relationship with his best friend Daemon, and how Sydney was recruited at 15 to become a Panacea agent.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the high price Winter pays for fame in Icon and Inferno. Is fame worth giving up your privacy, never knowing who you can trust, or reading lies about yourself in the tabloids or online?
For Sydney and Winter, being brave and never giving up is all part of being spy. Being those same things in their personal relationships isn't as easy. What do you think is more difficult — being physically or emotionally courageous?
What pop star would make a great undercover agent?
