What's the Story?

When students are old enough to go to UNICORN ACADEMY, they're each given their own beautiful unicorn to bond with and care for. The unicorn will develop magical powers that they need to learn to control and use properly. Each book presents a challenge for the girls and unicorns to overcome -- the magical water of the lake has turned a weird color, a freezing spell, a food source disappearing, the trees are threatened, and more. When things go wrong on Unicorn Island, the kids and their unicorns have to figure out how to fix things and what is worth risking, both with friendships and with school rules.

Filled with magic and adventure, the kids and their unicorns teach lovely lessons about the dynamics of friendship, the importance of communication, and how to trust themselves. The Unicorn Academy series is a great introduction to longer chapter books for established readers and focuses on the dynamics of kids living and learning together. The adults take time to consider the reasons the kids sometimes break a rule and don't just get mad about a rule being broken. When dealing with hurt feelings or hard social situations, the series shows how to speak up and how to stick up for friends even when it's difficult. The adventure and sparkly, rainbow unicorns will pull kids in and keep them turning pages, but they'll come away with so much more.

  • Families can talk about how they feel when someone is mean to them for no reason, like Valentina often is in Unicorn Academy Series. How does your body feel? Who do you talk to about it?

  • What are some of the good decisions the kids and unicorns made when they were on their adventure? Was there anything they shouldn't have done? Why?

  • What other books with magic have you read?

  • What are some character strengths the characters and unicorns demonstrate? What about teamwork, communication, and courage? How do these character strengths help them achieve their goals?
