What's the Story?
Inspired by a true story, GANGS OF GALICIA (a.k.a. Clanes) is a Spanish gangster series about a lawyer who quits her job to solve her father's murder. After Ana Gonzalez Soriano's (Clara Lago) father Jorge is killed on his sailboat in the Canary Islands by a couple originally thought to be tourists, she and her mother learn that he left money to Berta Figeraedo (María Pujalte) and Laura Silver (Melania Cruz), two women they don't know living in the northwestern town of Cambados. Ana, a successful Madrid-based lawyer, soon learns that everything they knew about their father was a lie, and that he had been in the witness protection program for testifying against the Padíns, the biggest drug trafficking cartel in Galicia. Struggling to come to terms with it all, Ana moves to Cambados to learn more about her father's past, about Berta and Laura, and to seek retribution. But the Padíns control almost everything (and everyone) in Cambados, and her presence does not go unnoticed. Meanwhile, Daniel (Tamar Novas), the public face of the Padíns while his father (Michel de Lira) is in prison, is trying to get Ana to be one of the family's attorney after he successfully recruits her to be his defense lawyer during a traffic violation hearing. As their relationship becomes more involved, the National Police task force, headed up by Detective Naranjo (Francisco Garrido), is trying keeping tabs on Tomar and the rest of the organization in hopes of bringing them down.
Is It Any Good?
This Spanish series is a too-familiar gangster-themed story thanks to all the expected elements that come with the genre. In Gangs of Galicia, the Padín organization seeks to continue its stronghold on the drug trade in the port city. There are lots of cat-and-mouse chases involving law enforcement, murders, and family dynamics that combine love and loyalty with greed and fear. The relationship between Ana and Daniel is interesting, and as it evolves, it opens the door for some intriguing events. However, the rest of the cast often seems two-dimensional, which isn't helped by the weak dialogue. Nonetheless, Gangs of Galicia offers enough action and weird twists to compel viewers who like this sort of thing to keep watching.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about complicated media characterizations of drug gangs. If what they do is against the law, why are their members often featured as sympathetic or charming characters? What messages does this send?
How do the creators of Gangs of Galicia want you to feel about the dynamic between Ana and Daniel? Does this change as the story plays out?
